LAWRENCE — Thursday was a big day for the Lawrence Fire Department.
A new fire engine arrived at the station on North German Church Road. And in keeping with a tradition that goes back to the 1800's, Lawrence firefighters pushed the new truck into its new home. Of course, the truck is much bigger and heavier than the horse-drawn engines of more than a century ago.
“If somebody would’ve told me this was going to happen four to five years ago, I wouldn’t have believed it. It’s actually a reality and it took a lot of planning, a lot of planning on the controller and the mayor’s part and nothing is ever done solely here. It’s always a combined effort," said Fire Chief Dino Batalis.
With the addition of the new engine, all of Lawrence frontline EMS and fire apparatus are less than three-years-old.
