INDIANAPOLIS — A major effort is underway to make sure families living on the east side of Indianapolis are able to put food on the table.
Several organizations worked together to provide 20,000 pounds of food for those in need at the John Boner Neighborhood Center on Monday.
The food was donated through Big Green Indianapolis and Conscious Alliance. Both are supported by the Herbert Simon Family Foundation.
Organizers said many people on the east side live in food deserts and the pandemic has made it even more difficult to access fresh and healthy food.
“There was a need in this neighborhood before COVID-19 and that need has been exacerbated by COVID-19,” said Laura Henderson, Big Green Indianapolis Program Manager. “We hope this helps folks have some period of time where they have to spend less energy worrying about food and spend their energy on other things, maybe even just getting to enjoy a little bit of the day.”
They hoped to provide for at least 160 families during the distribution event on Monday.
