INDIANAPOLIS — Cinco de Mayo, May 5, is a day to celebrate both Mexican-American culture and history.
In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is a day of remembrance for the Mexican army's May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War.
In the United States, however, the holiday has emerged as an occasion to honor Mexican culture in America.
The day also serves as a reminder that Americans really love their Tequila. Like, really love it.
According to Forbes, the U.S. is by far the largest market outside of Mexico for Tequila. Journalist Joseph Micallef found that the U.S. represents over 70% of all tequila export sales.
"In 2019, the tequila industry sold more than 1.6 billion dollars of tequila to the U.S. The 18.1 million 9-liter cases represent over 46-million gallons of tequila, enough to fuel billions of margaritas," Micallef wrote.
