In a time when we can't all gather around a table, we can still come together as a community. We're Open Indy is a partnership between WRTV and our local restaurants and businesses with one goal: getting them through this tough time. Every day, we will help shine a light on the businesses that make up our community by telling their stories and rallying around those who are keeping the grills going, the hospitals running, and the businesses operating.

INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis florist is adjusting to COVID-19 restrictions and still letting customers know they're in the business of brightening up people's day.

Lisa Slemmer started working part-time at Gilbert's Flower Shop when she was in high school and has turned into a life time love for all things floral.

She bought the shop in 2004 and has been brightening people's days with floral arrangements, no matter the occasion.

"It's become my passion," Slemmer said. "I love beautiful flowers and floral design. That's a part of me."

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Slemmer says the flow of business has slowed down.

"It has certainly taken it's toll on us," Slemmer said. "We've had slow days I am taking deliveries and we've had people in for pick up orders."

To follow social distancing guidelines and keep people safe, the shop is offering curbside services.

"Doing all that we can to make our customers happy and personalized services is something we do," Slemmer said. "I work everyday. I am there hands on."

She says she typically looks forward to Mother's Days and Easter, but business isn't what it is typically like during the season even with the modifications.

"This season is prom season and unfortunately, non of the kids get to do it though," Slemmer said.

She wants to remind people even with the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions, the shop is still open and she's there to help brighten someone's day.
