INDIANAPOLIS — The football season is over before it ever began for Butler University players as the Pioneer Football League announced Friday that they were canceling the fall 2020 season because of COVID-19 concerns.

The Pioneer Football League is made up of teams spread across the country, in a release sent out Friday, they said they decided to cancel the fall season because of concerns over travel and state and local health requirements in areas they would need to visit.

"Recognizing competition is an integral part of the student-athlete's educational experience, the PFL is committed to exploring meaningful opportunities and experiences for football student-athletes this academic year if this can be done reasonably and safely."

According to Associate Athletic Director John Dedman, Butler players were informed of the PFL's decision Thursday evening.

"The @ButlerUFootball team learned last night that there would be no games played this fall," Dedman posted on Twitter. "This morning, a group of those same Bulldogs living in Indy this summer were working out here in the facility. That's what leadership and culture looks like"
