SPEEDWAY — As fans head to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Saturday for the IndyCar Grand Prix and get ready for the Indianapolis 500 later this month, police are reminding people to "see something, say something."
Law enforcement officers in Indianapolis want to remind people to report anyone or anything suspicious or looks out of place.
Suspicious activity may include any of the following, according to the Indiana Intelligence Fusion Center:
- People asking unusual or detailed questions about security, public transportation or facilities
- Suspicious vehicles
- Packages in unusual places, look out of place, or unattended
- Strong odor coming from building or vehicle
- People who appear to be over dressed for the weather
“The main thing for people to remember is that the police can’t be everywhere all the time," Speedway Police Department Sgt. Jim Thiele said. "We are really relying on them to be our eyes and ears on suspicious activity.”
When reporting something suspicious to police, the Indiana Intelligence Fusion Center reminds people to do the following:
- Describe exactly what someone is doing
- Give police the exact location
- Give a description of how many people are involved, their age, gender, physical descriptions, and clothing descriptions
- Describe the equipment involved, like the make, model, license plate and color of a car, guns, cameras, or any other equipment they may have
“Trust your instinct," Thiele said. "If it doesn’t look right, then it probably should be look at by the police.”
If you see or hear something suspicious and feel it is an emergency, police are asking for you to call 911. If you feel something is not an immediate threat and want to report it, police ask you call the non-emergency line at 317-246-4300. You can also call the non-emergency line at 311 using a cellphone.
