INDIANAPOLIS -- In the Spring of 1980, the now well-known Gleaners Food Bank was founded with the goal of creating a hunger-free Indianapolis.

The distribution center handed out 83,000 pounds of food that year out of a 3 1/2 car garage on West 10th Street.

Just weeks later and a few blocks away the 500 Festival Parade crawled through downtown streets.

The theme: something old, something new.

Keeping to that theme at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, crews installed new Turn One bleachers to accommodate more fans.

And as for something old: Drivers started their engines that year resigned to driving slower.

USAC forced all teams to drop turbocharger boost levels, slowing cars down by about 10 miles per hour.

The 64th running of the Indy 500 was full of rookies and records.

Before the 500 miles were up, Tom Sneva became the first driver to start last and at one point lead the race.

But Sneva didn't hold it for long: Heavy favorite and pole sitter Johnny Rutherford led a total of 118 laps and dominated the field

Rutherford won by a 29 second margin, and joined rarified company as just the sixth driver to win the Indy 500 three times.
