INDIANAPOLIS -- Hoosiers moved their clocks forward in 2006, which led to a 1 p.m. start time for the 90th running of the Indianapolis 500.
For 19-year-old Marco Andretti, it was his first Indianapolis 500 start. His father Michael would come out of retirement for one more go at the 500.
Defending champion Dan Wheldon was a strong contender again, leading 148 laps, but a cut tire late in the race forced him to make an extra pit stop. He would settle for a 4th place finish.
The final restart saw Michael and Marco 1st and 2nd, son passing father for the lead with 3 laps to go.
But a fast charge came from pole winner Sam Hornish, Jr., who closed in on Marco during the final lap.
As the two came out of Turn 4, Hornish made the pass and beat Andretti by just 15 feet.
It was the first time in race history the winner made a final lap-pass for the lead, and the second-closest finish in race history.
One of the most dramatic endings in Indy 500 history brought more ammunition for those believe in the "Andretti Curse."
NOTABLE: Track announcer Tom Carnegie retired after 61 years, making the dramatic final lap his final call. Honda supplied all the engines for the field and proudly proclaimed not a single problem during the race. Missing from the field was Paul Dana, who was supposed to drive for Rahal Letterman Racing but was killed during a practice session in March at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
