INDIANAPOLIS — NASCAR's Cup Series race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway will shift to the track's road course in August 2021, IMS officials announced Wednesday.
The race will take place Aug. 15 on the second day of a NASCAR/IndyCar doubleheader Brickyard Weekend. A new NTT IndyCar Series race will be run on the road course Aug. 14.
"This started out as a brainstorm and Roger Penske helped get us over the finish line," IMS president Doug Boles said.
The announcement came nearly three months after NASCAR's first event on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course when the Xfinity Series raced over the July 4 weekend.
The change to a road course race comes after the Brickyard 400's 27-year history on the track's 2.5-mile oval course.
