Mallory, who would turn 83 next week, coached IU from 1984 to 1996. Though his overall win/loss record was only 69-77-3, Mallory's Hoosiers were competitive almost every year he was in Bloomington.
He took the Hoosiers to six bowl games in his 13 seasons, including back-to-back Top 20 rankings in 1987 and '88.
Indiana won the 1988 Liberty Bowl and the Copper Bowl in 1991 under Mallory - the only other bowl victory in school history was the 1979 Holiday Bowl under Lee Corso.
He was inducted into the IU Hall of Fame in 2002.

Bill Mallory won 168 games overall in 27 seasons as a head coach. His first job was with his alma mater, Miami (Ohio), where he played for Hall of Fame coach Ara Parseghian.
After leading Miami to an unbeaten season in 1973, Mallory went to Colorado. He took the Buffaloes to two bowl games in five seasons and won a share of a Big Eight Conference title in 1976, in an era in which the Big Eight was dominated by Oklahoma and Nebraska.
Mallory then went to Northern Illinois for four years, leading the Huskies to a 10-2 record in 1983 before taking the position at IU.
