INDIANAPOLIS — A training program hosted by the National Transportation Center is focused on getting students interested in working in the trucking and technician field before they graduate.
Students in the program will eventually help trucking companies keep semis up and running, so they can get all of their cargo from point A to point B safely and on time.
The training has two sides:
- Electrical focuses on looking at electrical currents, resistance and volate so technicians can diagnose an electrical problem and fix it on the trucks.
- Diesel focuses on electrical and electronics, steering and suspension, breaking systems, performance and the engine and safety.
The electrical program is about four weeks long, while the disel technician program is 20 weeks long.
Tom Weisenbach, CEO of NTC, says techs are the ones who help support the transportation industry and they have to be trained properly to provide high quality work.
"If we don't do our job, then we're putting someone at risk. their job is extremely critical to protecting everybody else that's going to be touching the products, the equiptment, really all of that."
NTC also works with students to make sure their training is free.
Companies in need of more techs also offer training scholarships to students.
