25 years ago: November tornado outbreak

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS -- On Nov. 22, 1992, 13 tornadoes tore their way through central Indiana, causing millions of dollars worth of damage.

The tornadoes were created when a large and strong area of low pressure ejected out of the southern plains and moved north through the Midwest. The cold front made its way through Indiana during the afternoon hours that day, producing 15 tornadoes.

Thirteen of those tornados occurred right here in central Indiana.

At the time, this was the largest tornado outbreak for the month of November. That was later surpassed by the tornado outbreak on Nov. 17, 2013. However, most of the those tornadoes were in northern Indiana.

What made this outbreak unique was the number of strong tornadoes that day. Typically in Indiana, most of our tornadoes are either EF-0 or EF-1 no matter what time of year it is. That day we had one F-4 (this was before the scale converted to EF) in Switzerland County, and five F-3 tornadoes.

One of those F-3 tornadoes moved through Marion County, just north of downtown. It was on the ground for nine miles, damaging more 200 hundred homes, snapping power poles and downing trees at Fort Harrison State Park. The tornado eventually weakened as it crossed I-465 at 56th St. on the east side.

The other F-3 tornadoes touched down in Monroe, Montgomery, Morgan and Shelby counties. The tornado that touched down in Martinsville was the longest one on the ground, lasting for 15 miles.

Despite the numerous tornados and the strength of the them, thankfully there were no fatalities. They caused more than $12 million in damage. More information can be found on the National Weather Service page here, and in the video player above.
