INDIANAPOLIS -- It seems right on cue. Fall arrives and we get our first taste of sweater weather and the urge to turn on the heat...even if it is just to take the edge off of the chill.
Whether you're a fan of fall or dread the change in seasons, the reality is we're getting closer to that first frost threatening our summer plants.
Some parts of the country, like the Northern Plains, have already had their first bout of cold temperatures and frosty conditions. That's actually pretty close to average for those areas.
For us, it typically takes a little longer. However, the earliest frost on record for Indy actually happened on September 23rd in 1995.
Below is a closer look at our average first frost and freeze dates across Central Indiana. Of course, it depends on where you live, but much of the state gets the first frost by the middle of October. The average first freeze comes a couple of weeks later in late October or early November.
But before you round up your sheets, or whatever you may use to cover your plants, take a look at the temperature outlook below. The first half of October calls for above average temperatures across the Midwest. So while we've already had our first 40s of the season, we may have to wait a little while before the 30s come knocking on our door.
