Here are some severe weather safety tips from the Office of Public Health and Safety:
- Pay attention to weather reports, warnings of thunderstorms and alerts that conditions could lead to a tornado. Be ready to change plans, if necessary.
- If a tornado warning is issued, find shelter immediately. Stay away from windows, doors and outside walls. If driving, do not stop under an overpass or bridge. A low, flat location is safer.
- When thunder roars, go indoors. A sturdy building is the safest place to be during a thunderstorm.
- If boating or swimming, get to land and find a sturdy, grounded shelter or vehicle immediately.
- Avoid flooded roadways — turn around, don't drown. Just six inches of fast-moving water can be hazardous.
- Stay away from downed power lines and trees and report them immediately. Report fallen power lines to IPL at 317-261-8111 and downed trees by calling the Mayor’s Action Center at 317-327-4622 and selecting option 2.
- City Leaders have been in contact with local Red Cross and anyone in need of non-emergency assistance or shelter can call Connect2Help by dialing 2-1-1.
